Chandler Restaurant Workers Fired For Missing Work To Protest SB1070
My favorite story of the week. Your actions have consequences. Some people still need to learn that the hard way….
CHANDLER, Ariz. — “We decided not to go to work because we don’t want SB 1070 to go through,” said Maria Laurean, who works at Pei Wei restaurant in Chandler. Instead of clocking in, dozens of co-workers joined together at the Arizona state Capital.
“It’s nothing against the company, it’s just to show the American people, “who’s going to run the restaurants?” Laurean said.
A day later, its seems employees got their supervisor’s attention. “We got fired,” said Pei Wei employee Elizabeth Serefin. “All of us that were at the march.” Serafin and 12 others are now unemployed, including one woman who has worked at the restaurant since it opened ten years ago.
“I can understand it because that’s their business and we were supposed to work, but come on, they have to understand us too,” Serfin said.
Serafin said they all understood they were taking a risk, and as the general manager of Pei Wei in Chandler reaffirmed Sunday, it’s just business, but for thirteen people, taking a chance to secure a future was more important than another day of work.
“If we want something to happen, we have to do something,” Serafin said. Laurean said she had Saturday off and still has her position at the restaurant.
Good for the manager of Pei Wei. For the rest of you lazy bastards who want to blow off a day of work to go to a protest march, enjoy your new found daytime freedom.

I am not a big fan of fast food chain restaraunts, but I think that I can make an exception here. Honey, we’re going to Pei Wei.
Read the law before you protest and stop your negligence against the federal government. Go find a Job in Mexico – In fact if you are a legal citizen of the United States please go to Mexico and let’s see how well you are treated by them. I don’t think so. You’d beg to lick the bathroom floor at Pei Wei if you did. So stop your wining and GO HOME.
Good for them for standing up for what is right. Actions like this helped build the labor and civil rights movements in this country. I presonally, will never patronize Pei Wei ever again.
Hey Donnie, 1st. Standing up for what is right? Have you read SB 1070? that is a yes or no question. And #2, are you saying that the employer does not have the right to fire people who don’t show up to work?
These type of stories always bring the white trash out of their trailers. any person in their right mind knows that had those workers been white, they would have been written up or at the most, been suspended for a day or two. Donnie, there has been a Boycott called against Pei-Wei, the Asian groups are showing great support for the boycott in the California region and the Church groups are responding rather well in Texas and Tennessee. there is a Facebook page in support of the 13 workers. there is also a major effort about to start to Unionize the service staff at all Pei-Wei locations in the 23 States where they operate. the ironic part of the whole ordeal is that Pei-Wei is owned by P.F. Changs, a Company that is trying very hard to establish a reputation fot it’s brand in Mexico, they have one store operating in Mexico City and plans to open two more Units in July of this Year. this story has been forwarded to the News Media in all Three regions of Mexico where P.F. Changs has interests. I’m not suggesting that any company will go out of Buisness over this, but it will end up costing them Tens of Thousands of Dollars per Month for the next few Months. a Pretty hefty price to pay for one stupid Management decision. you closet Racist’s are going to be spending all of your Trailer rent trying to support every place thats going to take a major hit over this SB1070, before it’s over. (but have fun trying)

I have not only read the Bill, I have 160 Copies of it in a box under my desk. I assume you are going to try and pretend that God ever created a Police Officer that was unable to manufacture Probable Cause that will be supported in a racist Court System ?

I am assuming Robert, that you do not own a business. I will take that even further and say that you probably are not responsible for any of your actions. I would guess that you would have an excuse for anything that happens to you. “It’s not my fault” probably comes out of your mouth faster than any other words.You sound just like those i fired the other day
I fired 4 people because they decided “senior ditch day” was more important and did not show up for work. they made a choice, so did I.
It has cost me less in re-training than the worry of wondering each morning if these 4 had something “better” to do. They let me know by thier actions they thought they did have better things to do than work for money, so I let them be right.

Now, what’s the difference between me calling you a racist for your support of the unjust firing of 13 Latino Employees (which you have absolutely no inside knowledge of) and you calling me a Liberal because of my stand on ONE SINGLE issue? You are correct on your assumption that I have no idea what a liberal thinks (or used to think) I can prove where I stand by my monthly credit card deductions to the Tea Party First Brigade. I have never been a liberal and will NEVER become one. I’m pro-life, pro gun, anti big Government, sick of our unjust system of taxation, fed up with Washington and sick of Obama. It just so happens that I’m man enough to speak out against injustice no matter which side of the fence that it’s coming from. Our dysfunctional immigration system is little more than a joke, if you expect people to obey a law than craft a law that is workable and POSSIBLE to obey. SB1070 is nothing more than a States version of a dysfunctional Federal law. SB1070 is nothing more than State sanctioned racial profiling. SB1070 will do NOTHING to secure the border or control who is entering the country. This entire circus of fear, hype and hysteria over immigration is based solely on lies and misconception, and what I’m saying can be proven by verified statistics. (Of course you have to care enough to do a bit of research)

Yes, you are a racist, IF the workers you fired are Black or Latino, and you have a history of letting Anglo employees get away with much worse infractions than the one you stated.
Robert, maybe you found a different news report, but who said anything about them being Latino employees?
As far as the SB1070 “working”, it would appear that is working already. Illegals are fleeing the state in droves.

Yo vivía en México por unos años. Y tengo mucho amor por la gente de México. Odio cuando gente dicen que soy racista.
I AM NOT A RACIST! Just because I agree with 1070 doesn’t make me a racist. When I visit Mexico I do NOT expect Mexico to pay for my health care, my schooling, and to translate everything into English so I can understand. I have learned to speak fluent Spanish, thank you very much! I pay my own way. And I learn the culture and participate in it.
Just last week I visited Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point for those of you who are too lazy to figure it out for yourselves) and I embraced the cultural differences. I love REAL Mexican food. I love the Mexican people. I tipped the grocery bagger, the grocery store parking attendant, and even the grocery store bathroom attendant (very culturally different than the U.S.). I didn’t force the Mexicans to conform to me – I conformed to their customs and culture.
So Roberto, just because I expect immigrants to do the same does NOT make me a racist.
I have to show I.D. whenever I am pulled over for speeding. I have to show I.D. whenever I use my credit card. When I came across the U.S. border I even had to show my Visa. I didn’t complain. I did it because it was required.
I don’t see what the big deal is with 1070, unless you are illegal. And if you are illegal than you shouldn’t be here – period.
If I were to choose to break laws in Mexico, that makes me a law breaker (illegal). I should be dealt with by the Mexican police, and justice system.
To me that is such an easy equation to figure out. But for some reason IDIOTS who choose to be illegal in the U.S. can’t seem to figure it out. Instead they call me racist, because I expect them to abide by the same law that I abide by.
Heck, there are some crazy Mexican laws that I don’t agree with – I still obey them. So it’s not a question of whether or not you agree with the law or not. It’s a question of whether you choose to obey the law or not.
And just because you don’t agree with the law doesn’t automatically mean you are a RACIST.

I checked into the story and there was no white employee who did not get fired and got to keep his job. There were 12 hispanic people who did not show up to work or call, so to me that is 12 people who don’t give a shit about their job. They made a choice not to show for work so they should loose their jobs. It is very simple and they are trying to make it complicated and bring their race into question. Shame on them!!!!!
