Meet Burkha Barbie

Not Too "Western" for ya?

Let’s just categorize this under just plain freaky.

One of the world’s most famous children’s toys, Barbie, has been given a makeover – wearing a burkha.  Wearing the traditional Islamic dress, the iconic doll is going undercover for a charity auction in connection with Sotheby’s for Save The Children.  More than 500 Barbies went on show yesterday at the Salone dei Cinquecento, in Florence, Italy.

Well as long it’s to “save the children”, then that’s OK.  The next comment illustrates the utter naiveté of these people.

The company director of Laird Assessors from The Wirral, Cheshire, said: ‘Bring it on Burkha Barbie, I think this is a great idea.  ‘I think this is really important for girls, wherever they are from they should have the opportunity to play with a Barbie that they feel represents them.

I can see it now.  “Here Azita, go out and play with your new toy. Just don’t go to the market place while you’re playing with your new Burkha Barbie, there has been a lot of bombings lately” And stay away from the mosque, I don’t want the Imam seeing you playing with a white Western/Zionist doll, either”.

Apparently the Company Director missed this story in Arizona, where an Iraqi dad ran down his own daughter and her friend because he believed his daughter had become “too Westernized“.  And they live here in the US.  So Director, you really believe that this is going to sell in the streets of Tehran?  You’ve been drinking way too much qahwa.

If they are trying to reach different markets why don’t they introduce the Ho Barbie, and Gothic Barbie, Bipolar Barbie, and Gang Banger Barbie? I would just love to see my daughter play with a tattoed, pierced doll that when you pulled the string she blurted out vulgarities.

Or better yet, I think Wetback Barbie would be a hit here in Tucson.
