Big Union vs. One Eagle Scout

Written By: PT on November 16, 2009 3 Comments

eagle scoutFile this article under bizarre.  Your warm and fuzzy union is all PO’d about an Eagle Scout doing volunteer work where only Union members are supposed allowed anointed to tread.

In pursuit of an Eagle Scout badge, Kevin Anderson, 17, has toiled for more than 200 hours hours over several weeks to clear a walking path in an east Allentown park.

Little did the do-gooder know that his altruistic act would put him in the cross hairs of the city’s largest municipal union.

Nick Balzano, president of the local Service Employees International Union, told Allentown City Council Tuesday that the union is considering filing a grievance against the city for allowing Anderson to clear a 1,000-foot walking and biking path at Kimmets Lock Park.

“We’ll be looking into the Cub Scout or Boy Scout who did the trails,” Balzano told the council.

Balzano said Saturday he isn’t targeting Boy Scouts. But given the city’s decision in July to lay off 39 SEIU members, Balzano said “there’s to be no volunteers.” No one except union members may pick up a hoe or shovel, plant a flower or clear a walking path.

Which bears the question, “In order to better serve the community, why can the laid-off union workers volunteer and work with the Eagle Scout instead of bitching about him?”  The mayor of Allentown seems to agree.

“We would hope that the well-intentioned efforts of an Eagle Scout candidate would not be challenged by the union,” said Mayor Ed Pawlowski in an e-mail Friday. “This young man is performing a great service to the community. His efforts should be recognized as such.”

Remember when the unions represented a true American work ethic?  It is easy to see why the unions are so tight with congress these days.  They have SO much in common.

  • They both do not listen to their members/constituents.
  • They are both power hungry, trying to control the lives of those they purport to serve.
  • They both are totally a self-serving bunch; concerned only with moving forward their autocratic agendas.
  • They both demand monies from us [taxes/dues] and have very little to show for it [other then getting rich themselves].

President Obama and the teleprompter has said time and time again that it is time for young folk to get out and serve their country.  Just be watchful that you do not do a better job than your local union guy.  You might get served with grievance papers.

Well I’ll go ahead and say it and let the chips fall.

Unions should be dismantled. They serve no purpose but to protect lazy people that could not otherwise work in the private sector.

Unions once servered a purposed but not anymore!

I work with union people all the time as well as non-union and I find that union people always have a reason not to do something and quite frankly I get better production for less money out of non-union workers. Oh, and the non-union people are making good money and get paid vacations, I believe most union pepole do not get time off with pay.

You right- unions and Congress are cut from the same mold. I was appalled when the union recently threatened to strike against Fry’s and Safeway because the stores wanted the employees to start paying a portion of their healthcare insurance premiums. The stores had been paying these premiums in full. Most employers only pay half their employees’ premiums.

I’m still waiting to see if the SEIU thugs who beat up the guy outside a town hall function are going to be charged. Seems like they’re getting a pass on that, but on the other hand, Andy Stern may be in hot water….

A few years ago SEIU tried to recruit corrections officers at the detention facility where I worked, by standing outside the exit doors at shift change. Union organizing on county property was a clear violation of county rules. We literally had to throw them off the property because they refused to loeave. They’re unbelievably aggressive, brazen and obnoxious.

Altho Unions were originally a way to put a stop to evil wealthy republicians who took advantage of the little people who had no way of defending them selves from the evil republician capitolists that were providing jobs for the masses who were helping in the war efforts. Peolpe like the Rochofellers, Hienz, Kennedy’s, andd all those other rich republicians.
And unions got the “common people” all banded together, and together the people let the wealthy owners know what workers wanted.

Fair pay and fair work enviroment

Now if we jump ahead one hundred years…… We once again have the unions jumping in to help protect the “common people” let the big evil bosses know what the workers expect.

Volunteers are not allowed to do work that a union person could have done.

We have come so far in one hundred years.
It is truely a sad day when a person can’t do a good deed.
Next thing we won’t be able to be helped accross the street by a boy scout either. Probablly a crossing guard thing.
If we are to learn from history.. I believe that this history lesson would show is that good intentions errode faster than memories.
    Unions… bah humbug!
