Oopsie – Rio Nuevo forgets to pay taxes on 3 sites
13 years and millions of dollars later, we have nothing to show for it . If we were in Phoenix, things would have been completed by now. But since we keep voting in the same ship of fools, I guess everyone is cool with Rio Nowhere.
In between filing lawsuits and commissioning forensic audits, no one at the Rio Nuevo District paid its property taxes.
The unpaid 2010 taxes for Presidio San Agustín del Tucson, the downtown site used to mark historic events and Tucson’s birthday, were sold in an over-the-counter tax-lien purchase for $627.37.
The district paid the 2011 taxes on June 19 and has until 2015 to pay the 2010 tax bill before the lien holder can proceed with foreclosure.
“This is embarrassing,” board member Mark Irvin said of the April 2 sale.
Irvin didn’t provide a reason for the unpaid taxes and said he had been kept in the dark concerning district finances for the past 18 months.

haahahaha,…. after they spent all that money, they don’t have any left,…to pay the taxes, what do you expect from the government, even if it is local? I mean, they have such fine examples in the higher governments….
When will we fire this finance director?
That Star article was a shameful hit piece to make one more personal attack on Jodi Bain.
Hey Fletcher, you’ve been on the job two weeks, it’s not the “old board’s” problem anymore. Step up to the plate and own this mess.
I also find it hilarious that Steve Kozachik, who has spent the last six months saying that we need to get over the past and move forward is now all of a sudden interested in analyzing a past mistake of this unpaid property tax. I’ll use Steve’s words against him “hey City of Tucson, why don’t you pick up the phone and tell the board they have a bill due”.
This whole thing has been nothing but a swindle perpetrated on the taxpayers of Arizona. Sadly, I’ve lost hope that anyone will go to jail but the whole thing should be shut down. Pay off the bonds, disband the district, board, idea, sell the assests, provided anyone can ever figure out what they are, and maybe, just maybe, Walmart will buy the property and start generating some revenue because this dysfunctional city will never be able to manage their way out of a wet paper bag if you armed them with spears and a Garmin.
PS, and that picture says everything.
